Not What I Expected

So the Silverlight Control Builder Contest is now over and after all that excitement and anticipation from the community we got, a single, solitary entry.  One person took the time to build a Silverlight control and submit it to our contest.  I have to admit that we were expecting a little more of a response than that.  We actually received more unique vendor contributions than we did contestants.  To compound the disappointment, the contest site accumulated over 2,300 unique visitors with a total of about 9,500 page views throughout the duration of the contest, so it wasn't like nobody knew about the contest.

So, I'm trying to learn from this experience and I want to know why we didn't receive any entries.  If you were thinking about entering the contest, but didn't, I would be very interested to know why.  I really want to know your honest opinion of what was wrong.  Here are a few questions I have for the Silverlight Community:

  • Was the contest object unclear?
  • Were the rules too confusing?
  • Did the "US-Entries Only" requirement stop you?
  • Was the contest intimidating?
  • Was the contest too difficult?
  • Was the contest simply not interesting?
  • Were the prizes not worth the effort?
  • Was there not enough time?
  • What would it take for you to enter the contest?
  • Is everyone just simply too busy to commit to something like this?

As Dave Campbell mentioned, I do consider the contest a failure, but I'm trying to make the best of the experience.  I really want to try the contest again and make right the things that were wrong in the first attempt.

I know Silverlight is new (especially version 2), but the community is growing fast and I really expected a better response from the community.  I really care about the success of Silverlight and community is a big part of that.

Gravatar I acknowledged the non-US issue, and it's unfortunate that we didn't have the other prizes when that decision was made. At the time we were low on *something* to give, and it seemed like a good idea.

In retrospect, were I not directly involved, I don't think I could have entered because of other committments, but I find it hard to believe that EVERYBODY was over committed :)

Next year, Page... next year it'll be world-wide and we'll need a gang of folks to judge them!

Gravatar I think the "US-Entries Only" was the reason for the poor interest. It's a kind of discrimination.

Personallly I don't have enough time but if I had I'd be happy to participate. I hope that the next contest will end in a wide variety of good controls.

Gravatar I read about the contest and wanted to enter but I just didn't have the time. I have been working hard on an extensive Silverlight proejct for my company and have create several new controls for it (such as a expanding/collapsing group panel and a range slider). I would have loved to submit my RangeSlider but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to since much of the underlying code was taken (although enhanced and added to) from the Silverlight 1 slider source code. 8/14/2008 3:27 PM | Todd Herman

Gravatar My reason was simply I was sick on the weekend I had decided to wrap up my control and post it. If I would have had another 2 days you would have gotten another control.

Sorry to hear that participation was so small. I would have guessed you would recieve many more controls or I would have made more time to finish mine so I could get my hand on free prizes :) 8/19/2008 11:59 AM | Richard

Gravatar Any chance you'll be reopening this contest up to give us another chance to submit? 8/19/2008 12:20 PM | Richard

Gravatar Yes, we will be running the contest again. It will most likely be after Silverlight 2 is released. Also, please be sure to check out the INETA Silverlight Challenge which will be starting soon. Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate it!
